RFC 2761:

A transfer mode in which the information is organized into 53 byte PDUs called cells. It is asynchronous in the sense that the recurrence of cells containing information from an individual user is not necessarily periodic. ATM is based on the ISDN model; however, unlike ISDN, ATM uses fixed length (53 byte) cells. Because of the fixed length of ATM PDUs, higher layer PDUs must be adapted into ATM using one of the four ATM adaptation layers

Glossary:

AAL, ATM Adaptation Layer.
(RFC 2761) The layer in the B-ISDN reference model which adapts higher layer PDUs into the ATM layer. There are four types of adaptation layers:

ABR, Available Bit Rate.
(RFC 3134) An ATM layer service category for which the limiting ATM layer transfer characteristics provided by the network may change subsequent to connection establishment. A flow control mechanism is specified which supports several types of feedback to control the source rate in response to changing ATM layer transfer characteristics.

AREQUIPA, Application REQuested IP over ATM.
(RFC 2170) A method for allowing ATM-attached hosts that have direct ATM connectivity to set up end-to-end IP over ATM connections within the reachable ATM cloud, on request from applications, and for the exclusive use by the requesting applications. This allows the requesting applications to benefit in a straightforward way from ATM's inherent ability to guarantee the quality of service (QoS).

ATM Link.
(RFC 2761) A virtual path link (VPL) or a virtual channel link (VCL).

ATM Peer-to-Peer Connection.
(RFC 2761) A virtual channel connection (VCC) or a virtual path connection (VPC).

Cell.
The unit of transmission in ATM. It is a frame consisting of a 5 byte header and 48 bytes of payload.

ILMI, Integrated Local Management Interface.
(RFC 2601) Provides a mechanism for ATM-attached devices, such as hosts, routers, and ATM switches, to transfer management information. It is based on the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), Version 1, and supports get, get-next, set and trap operations. The ILMI specification designates the switch side of the ATM link as the 'network side' and the host/router side of the ATM link as the ' user side.' The Service Registry MIB, which is outlined in Section 3, is implmented on the network side and is queried from the user side.
